Neurodiagnostic Center

The UCSF MS Center offers a state-of-the-art suite of neurodiagnostic services conveniently on-site in our clinic. Under the direction of Dr. Ari Green and his colleagues, the UCSF MS Center offers a state-of-the-art suite of services through our Neurodiagnostic Center to help identify patients who may need more aggressive treatment.

The Neurodiagnostic Center utilizes a full array of tools including the following:

Lumbar puncture (cerebrospinal fluid examination) service.
We use a low-trauma (Sprotte) needle whenever possible to minimize side effects and patient discomfort.

Post-Void Residuals (PVR) to assess urinary retention.

High-contrast, low contrast, color, night and cone-contrast vision.

Spectral-Domain Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), a non-invasive retinal scan to measure nerve injury and axonal loss in the retina. This test can also be used to screen for macular edema.

Visual Field Testing (Automated static and kinetic perimetry), a non-invasive way to test central and peripheral vision.

Electroretinography (multifocal), a measure of retinal function.

Full-field and Multifocal Visual Evoked Potentials (VEPs), non-invasive ways to measure how fast the eye communicates signals to the brain.

Somatosensory Evoked Potentials (SSEPs), a noninvasive way to measure how fast the nervous system carries sensory information from the limbs to the brain. This test helps to distinguish whether sensory symptoms may be coming from the central versus peripheral nervous system.
